modular

thinking

this project posed the concept of starting small through creation of a module, or "part." This part would then be used a building block for several hypothetical structures in the Abalone Cove State Conservation Area.

I created a triangular shaped node with inspiration from the structure of a verterbrae as my modular part. The inner piece made up the structural core for the piece, with three triangluar glass panels on each side that would react and open up to sunlight.

from this modular piece, I was tasked to create a small artist's residence/retreat space.

my artist residence utilized two different types of modular connections. one, was the use of vertical connection or stacking, the other lateral and more lattice like. the working side of the residence used the lateral method, to create a more openly lit and fluid space, while the living side used the vertical method, creating a more reserved, closed, and private environment.

B

  • explores the vertebrae like connection of module to create form and structure in an arching pattern

  • looks into the shape and layout of the form in plan, creating two coinciding circles to differentiate types of connection

  • later version of coinciding circular planar view, but with more intention in how the sides interact to create this space in the middle

along with this residence, the module was also used to create a community structure for all 12 hypothetical artists at this retreat.

with this structure, I treated the module as more of a glazing technique upon a main structure with four purposes of structural, lighting, privacy, and abstract uses in their additions to the building.
